H.H. Dalai Lama - Essence Of Mahayana Buddhism

Mahayana Buddhism Teaching
Very Profound Teaching. The Dalai Lama send a clear, steady and timeless message. I influenced me greatly. I will pass this on to my friends and family.

essence is right
It is hard to understand, but the teachings are all there. Dali was still young and I am sure some things have changed in the ideas , but a good piece for starters. Bad camera, sound and no subtitles. Still it is the points that matter.

H.H. Dalai Lama - Power Of Compassion, The

lovely video
This is a lovely video of HH Dalai Lama giving a 1993 public talk in the UK, the topic being "compassion." This older film footage does not have the same crisp clear look of more modern films, but is still pretty good. Geshe Thupten Jinpa (still in robes) is also on stage as the translator for the talk, but HH speaks mostly in English and as usual does a wonderful job of communicating with the audience. At the end of the talk, there is a brief period of questions & answers with His Holiness, followed by a beautiful performance of Mongolian folk music by a father and son duo.

Raymond Did It

Bloody good times
I caught this at the debut screening. It's loads of guts and good times. The film avoids the traps of being too post slasher self aware, or being too much of a overt grindhouse style tribute. Raymond ends up being a straight ahead slasher flick in the mold of 80's bloodbaths, that delivers on the deaths big time. The title roll is a fine addition to the slasher ranks (interesting enough to hold the screen as a character and violent enough to pay off as a monster) and the picture was obviously made with a lot of affection for the genre. Help support indie horror and pick up a copy for Halloween.

Raymonds good friend, Tammy, played by Lindsay Felton.
After seeing a special screening, the most notable character is Tammy, Played by Lindsay Felton, the only decent likable character in the whole story, Lindsay's performance was great and out shined the other actors, overall, a good film with good special effects for a low budget film.

fantastic film
i loved this film when i saw it at a special screening! can't wait to see the DVD. these filmmakers have a long standing love for horror and cinema craft and are ones to watch for the future!

Oscar Peterson - Stuttgart Concert

great performance
true master
great band
Well worth the time.
Classic jazz trio beauty, interplay, improv, listening and beyond.
highly recommended, AAA

Outstanding concert
Admittedly I have been a great fan of Oscar Peterson all my life. Was lucky to see the great Canadian pianist twice life and I have several concerts on DVD. This shows Peterson in great form and still before a stroke reduced his ability to play at the speed of Art Tatum with fabulous harmonious jazz tackling some of the great classics, including his own compositions. The picture quality of the club setting is also very good.

Johnny Winter - Live Rockpalast 1979

Go get it now!
You like the blues? No? Know who Johnny Winter is? No? Well, let's do a deserved introduction to his life and career up to the point of this 1979 concert. Then you'll be saying yes to both questions after you watch this concert.

Wikipedia
John Dawson "Johnny" Winter III (born February 23, 1944) is an American blues guitarist, singer, and producer. Best known for his late 1960s and 1970s high-energy blues-rock albums and live performances. In 1988, he was inducted into the Blues Foundation Hall of Fame and in 2003, he was ranked 74th in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time".

Winter caught his biggest break in December 1968, when Mike Bloomfield, whom he met and jammed with in Chicago, invited him to sing and play a song during a Bloomfield and Al Kooper concert at the Fillmore East in New York. As it happened, representatives of Columbia Records (which had released the Top Ten Bloomfield/Kooper Super Session album) were at...

The Texas Guitar Wizard!
A great chance to see Johnny Winter at peak performance. If you're a fan or have a casual interest in the man and/or this style of music, this is a fantastic set too behold! Good camera angles (considering the era) and the sound is good too. For me, it's a pleasure to see the effortless flow of music that seems to never stop emanating from Johnny's fingers and brain! A great movie to watch, especially after finishing his biography (which I can also recommend!).This was a free viewing since I have Amazon Prime, but the video is now on my Wish List and I will hope to soon add it to my collection. A performance that bears multiple viewings!

great blues-rock
Johnny's playing is excellent.Excellent tone, smooth fluid playing. Some sf the tunes seem to go on too long and wear out their welcome at the half-way point.Johnny seems frustrated that the audience is not fully embracing his return to blues after being a rock and roll guitar god throughout the seventies. All in all,a worthy performance.

It's In The Blood [HD]

Well worth watching!
Watching this film, it's hard to believe it is a "first" film because of how well it is executed from way the movie was shot, edited, and overall delivered. Moment by moment, it is very well done. The story itself is moving in that it deals with personal demons/trauma and how much people run from the things that hurt them rather than dealing with them head on. I also feel that it is more of a psychological thriller than a horror, but it does have it's moments of scariness. I gave this movie 4 stars instead of 5 though because there is some ambiguity to the story that I as a viewer do not like, but overall it is definitely well worth watching. I also believe this is the first of greater things to come from director Scooter Downey.

Enjoyable exploration in the horror genre
The movie is about a father and son on a hunting trip where they quickly realize they are actually the hunted. The interwoven flashbacks of the family tragedy are well done, and gave this low budget film a much more powerful, polished feel. I enjoyed the acting of Lance Henrikson and newcomer Sean Elliot, who has writing credits as well, as they did a fine job as father and son. The movie is an exploration of how to repair the human mind and thus blurs fantasy and reality, but unfortunately, the conclusion just didn't reconcile it for me. I felt a bit overdosed on the hallucenogenic nature, and at the end, I felt I needed more reality to ground it and bring it home. Overall, I would recommend a watch for its unique approach to the genre and the way it navigates away from B-movie status. But its' ambition to drive home a more powerful message dilutes the scare factor, and leaves the film somewhere in between okay and good.

Low budget, but well directed.
If you read any of my reviews, you know I'm not going to tell you any spoilers. So, here's my take on this film: It's more of a mental issues mixed with a desperate situation. By the time you get to the middle of the movie, you will feel for the son and what he has and is going through. It has a touch of male bonding too, which lends to the storyline nicely. It is not a full on horror movie in the sense of slicing and dicing, it's more like mental horror. Great flick! Worth a watch.

All Together [HD]

`If you don't see any objection, I'd rather decompose at home.' Coming of Old Age
ALL TOGETHER (Et si on vivait tous ensemble?) is an important French film written and directed by Stéphane Robelin that addresses the ever more important question of aging. People are living longer and while that has its benefits it also poses problems not only for the aging population who must learn to cope with their diminishing facilities but also for the families of those who may not be content with their fading importance and individuality. In other words, how will we each cope with getting old without loved ones that are willing to hold our hand and be comfortably at our side until the end? Films such as this are being created more frequently (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel form this year also addressed similar issues as The Bucket Plan and other in the recent past). Where ALL TOGETHER differs is in the honest way the feelings and expectations and coping codes are managed with dignity without losing the lightness of comedy.

Annie (Geraldine Chaplin) Jean (Guy...

I Want Something Jollier!
Jane Fonda, playing Jeanne in this French film is searching for her coffin, she wants 'something jollier', something in pink! 'All Together' is a film about five 70'year old long time friends. They're all getting older, some becoming forgetful, some ill and they need each other.

The USA film about growing older, needing help and assistance and the love of friends. The philosophy rings true, but there is a lot missing in this film. Jane Fonda is the liveliest, who brings humor and love to the group. Her husband, Pierre Richards, plays forgetful, Albert. Geraldine Chaplin plays Annie and her husband, Guy Bedos, plays Jean. Claude Rich plays Claude, the old Bon vivant who lives alone and is the incentive for moving in together. Of course, incidents happen, tempers fray and life is not a bed of roses. A tragic incident brings them all together, finally, and it left me wondering who will be left, ad who will take care of the last one.

Terrific acting, but the...

Don't throw the baby with the bath water!
Five older friends, choose to live together instead of living in nursing care facilities. Their children are opposed to their "living" ideas. It is a peak into the future for most people. Their health deteriorating, they realize that they should be there together to bolster each other up and encourage each other in their late life.

In the process of living, a young man helps them and writes his thesis on their life, documenting their hardships and their joys. His conversations with the character Jeanne embarrasses him as she talks of sexuality freely.

Even if you are not (like me) a fan of Jane Fonda for political reasons, still enjoy the movie and all its realistic situations. It is sad that some people think that the elderly lose their sexuality and become a-sexual. In fact it is not true and this movie makes these people in their 70s more approachable and real. It might offend some but it is real.

The Heart of Christmas [HD]

Awesome movie
I highly recommend this movie, please be prepared to cry as it is very very sad. I think it was extra hard for me because I've buried two of my children.

I thought the actors did a wonderful job with the medical jargin. Although there are quite a few mistakes, like in the movie they say Dax wasn't sick until he was 3 years old in real life he was 13 months old when he fell ill. In one scene the little girl is wearing a bright pink sleeveless jacket. When the camera angle changes she's not wearing it. Then when it changes again she's magically wearing it again. Still the movie is amazing and it's truly touched my heart.

I love that 5% of the profits from this dvd go to St. Judes but in my opinion it should be alot more.

Also Amazon is charging $25 for this movie. Go to walmart. I purchased this for $9.96 there just a few days ago

TRUE ESSENCE OF THE HOLIDAYS!!!
I THOUGHT THIS MOVIE WAS A VERY HEART WARMING STORY THAT PORTRAYED THE ESSENCE OF WHAT CHRISTMAS IS REALLY ABOUT. . . LOVING OTHERS! ABOUT PEOPLE, AND NOT THINGS. YOU'LL BE WEEPING MOST OF THE MOVIE, BUT IT HAS AN AMAZING LESSON TO BE LEARNED. I PRAY FOR THESE CHILDREN! IT WAS SO WORTH IT!

A Touching Christmas Classic
I had heard about this movie from the people that viewed in certain areas but it wasn't shown here so I decided to buy the DVD. It was a truly touching story and sad but moving story. I was encouraged that people care in this selfish world. I also was moved by the music of Matthew West and have since become a fan. Got a sense of hope of people who are so busy with things and not on each other and then seeing them stop to help a family in crisis. Highly recommend this little sleeper movie based on a true story.

The Lion of Judah

Misleading Title for a Documentary
Holocaust survivors experienced something so horrible that it takes more than sight trip, dialouge and naive discussions of a dark chapter perpetuated by ordinary humans 70 years ago who are not any different than today. This documentary fall short on many ways how the commentators vaguely response and tries hard to express feelings comparing to the present day situation with the each witnessing of the physical site of holocuast places and the monuments. If you want to understand the holocaust experience deeply in the context of human sufferings and hatred than this is not one of those documentary.....they are others out there and not necessarily it have to be a documentary always, some holocaust fiction movies does a better job.

GREAT
Great movie, documentary, and also show us how antisemitism still exist and how Poland doesn't give a damn for the holocaust

Profile in Courage
A portrait of a proud and courageous man. This is an important film as there are few survivors of the Shoah left. Should be required viewing in schools.

2016 Obama's America

Not Perfect
But just good enough to open some eyes. True die hard Democrats will hate it as you can see by the rating but if one takes off the blinders they will see a much better of "The One".I have to ask myself why anyone would spend upwards of 3 million dollars to seal school records and just about any other record that matters and the media turns a blind eye. I have let several people borrow this and all came back with different opinions of Obama, even two die hards!

Obama's Secret Revealed
2016 Obama's America brings crystal clarity to four years of the strange, Un-American domestic and foreign policies that we have seen as a result of electing a President based on affirmative action instead of qualification.

The Missing Piece of the Puzzle
Back in 2008 I remember being puzzled at the hype surrounded Barack Obama. Fellow students and friends were hanging on every word and I remember celebrations and joyful outbursts floating across campus the night he won. It just didn't make sense to me and I always felt like something wasn't right. Here was a man who came out of nowhere, swooned everyone into loving him, and had no clear experience or new ideas to bring to the table. Now let me state this: I'm a diehard conservative and knew in advance that I was opposed to Obama's ideas. I always felt that something was missing and I couldn't put my finger on what it was about Obama that I found so frightening. I figured he was just incompetent and unable to rise up to the role of Leader of the Free World. That may very well be true. However, 2016: Obama's America finally proposes a theory that makes sense and does it in a compelling and respectful manner.

Dinesh D'Souza did his homework and takes us into Obama's past,...

The best captured moments of freeriding.
When watching mountain biking movies, you assume they will be showing crazy descents, big air, crashes, all to a rocking sound track. This movie has all this, but it also has a whole lot more. This is not only the visions of downhilling, but also the thoughts, feelings and spirit involved.

What catches you first is the film shot. Bar none, the best footage ever shot. Sharp, clean, and artistic, just like the riders. You can tell a lot of work went into shooting and editing this movie. It is just beautiful, and with the sound sound track, it just captures you and gets you involved with the film. It does have it's rocking moments, but what gets you are the mellow, soulful soundtrack in between.

Lastly, the riders narration brings you that much closer to the film. They express their feelings, what they are going through, what they have planned and why.

I could watch this film a thousand times and never be bored. The beautiful scenery, the...

Well rounded video
A very nice collection of 8 different terrains using excellent camera angles, long cuts of video, and good match of music. Steve Niles' Remains

a nice surprise
After seeing the "made for television" 2012 Zombie Apocalypse, I had little hope for Remains, thinking it was going to have a lot of the same production value; mainly over used and cheesy C.G.I. affects and a thrown together story line with a poorly written script, which would all lead to annoying, clichéd characters that were under developed. Well, zombie movie lovers rejoice! The Chiller Channel has got their stuff together and made a durn fine, rooting, tooting zombie movie! Yes, it does have a slight "made for television" feel to it, in that there is no gratuitous loads of gore and blood and the intelligent actors don't have "f-bomb" diarrhea of the mouth! Some folks like that in their zombie movies, I however prefer a though out and well written story and script! And I got just that with Remains!
Now in other zombie movie reviews I have read where folks are disappointed that the movie didn't add "something new" to the zombie genre... sorry, but Remains is not a movie...

THE BEST THING YOU EVER DID WAS ME!
This zombie film starts on international "Peace Day" when some undisclosed process will neutralize radiation and make nuclear weapons useless. While these sketchy details are televised in the background, Tom (Grant Bowler) and Tori (Evalena "cleavage" Marie) go to a bomb shelter to get it on at a Reno hotel casino. When they emerge I expected to see Burgess Meredith looking for his glasses, but instead there is a full blown zombie food riot going on outside. Like "Dawn of the Dead" the first rule is to secure the perimeter and eliminate zombie hazards within the safe zone...which isn't that easy as this appears to be the only hotel casino that doesn't have a gun stashed anywhere.

Our non-zombie people group narrows down to four, with one openly gay character. (Guess who dies first because killing off the brother first has become too cliche?) The radioactive zombies require head shots and are a combination of fast moving and foot dragging zombies, whichever suits the mood of...

Not bad, not great. Totally watchable.
Maybe its just because I've watched so many terrible zombie movies that were made with more money and less love, but I thought this was kind of okay. It could have been better, yes. But it was enjoyable. There were a few moments that made no sense, but there were also a few moments where i cringed, and a few moments where i unexpectedly laughed my butt off at something that was SUPPOSED to be entertaining. SO i call that a win in this genre. I believe that this movie is a good example on the positive influence the success of "The Walking Dead" TV show is having on networks and studios throwing a couple dimes behind a director with a bit of vision. Now... if they could just start throwing them at BETTER directors with MORE time to work ..

Casino Royale (1967) [HD]

Not one but two versions of Casino Royale
Finally this comedic take on the James Bond series makes its way onto DVD, and for completists and fans of James Bond this 2002 DVD promises not only the 1967 version of Ian Flemings first 007 novel but also an edited down version of the very first James Bond movie, the 1950s CBS TV movie that starred Barry Nelson as James Bond (thats right, Sean Connery was NOT the first actor to portray 007). Made for an American audience, the character of James Bond is a CIA agent in that show and Leiter is the British intelligence agent. That movie, which is listed as a special feature on this DVD, also starred Peter Lorre as the villain Le Chiffre. Made in the days of live television this entertaining oddity is worth watching for the bloopers alone.
Years later, the rights to "Casino Royale" made it into the hands of another movie producer who, convinced that any attempt to make a serious version of "Casino Royale" would be doomed without the talents of Sean Connery, decided to make the...

How Many 007s Does It Take To Change a Light Bulb?
Eon Production's DR. NO was a great hit in the early 1960s, and Eon quickly snapped up the rights to the rest of Ian Flemming's novels about super spy James Bond--except for the CASINO ROYALE, which had already been purchased earlier by CBS for a 1950s television adaptation. When the property wound up at Columbia Pictures, they decided to create the satire to end all satires with a host of writers, five famous directors, and an all-star cast led by Peter Sellers. But Sellers' ego reached critical mass during the production and he was fired mid-way into filming--and suddenly roles that were originally envisioned as cameos had to be expanded to finish the project. The result is one of the most bizarre films imaginable. The story, such as it is, finds James Bond (David Niven) called out of retirement to deal with the sudden disappearance of secret agents all over the world. In order to confuse the unknown enemy, Sir James orders ALL secret agents to use the name James Bond--and...

Excellent '60s Magic; Acid Soaked Bond Spoof
As a '60s afficionado I finally got around to seeing this great psychedelic mindblower of a film. It starts off slow....enter Ursula Andress. There are at least 100 beautiful European girls in this film and I can see Woody Allen's motivation to kill all men taller than him so he can get them all. As the film takes off you realize that you have to be on Acid to understand the plot, as everyone remotely connected with this film must've been. The sets range from a Scottish castle to a Berlin haunted house to Orson Wells' psychedelic torture chamber complete with mod spiral funhouse rooms, and it gets more bizarre from there. Great music by Burt Bacharach (The Look of Love).

Has cameos from practically every British star of the time, has a Spaceship full of Woody's duplicate World Leaders...it has everything. What can I say, if you like the '60s you'll love this if you possess that '60s Psychodelic Consciousness that is.

Quick

(3.5 stars) "Quick" is a popcorn action/comedy film with a slick presentation and really cool stuntwork and visual effects.
From JK Films, makers of popcorn action films such as "Tidal Wave" and "Sector 7″ are back again with the 2011 South Korean action comedy titled "Quick".

Directed by Beom-gu Cho ("Bar Legend") and written by Soo-jin Park, the film would star actor Min-ki Lee ("Romantic Island", "Oishii Man"), actress Ye-won Kang ("Tidal Wave", "Hello Ghost") and actor In-kwon Kim ("Tidal Wave", "My Wife is a Gangster 2″).

The film did well in South Korea and was released in the U.S. via Blu-ray and DVD courtesy of Shout! Factory and CJ Entertainment in Sept. 2012.

"Quick" is presented in 1080p High Definition (Anamorphic Widescreen). If there is one thing I an say about "Quick" is that the film looks beautiful, stylish and slick! Special Forces (French with English Subtitles)

Some `Special' Production Value & Excellent Performances Battle the Clichés In SPECIAL FORCES
Good military thrillers are hard-to-find, and that's probably because the field of cinema has long cultivated lesser soldier pictures masquerading as something bigger or grander than what they truly are. For example, a reviewer for the Hollywood Reporter draws a light comparison to the Rambo films ("a body count that rivals any of the Rambo films"), and, to be honest, I think that does a disservice to SPECIAL FORCES as well as it does Rambo. Rambo is clearly a fictional creation; sure, he's entertaining and a crowd-pleaser, but the men who make up true-life Special Forces teams have very little in common with and how Rambo goes about his job. Rambo is bigger-than-life. He's over-the-top. Real soldiers lie low much of the time, and they only rush into combat when either ordered or find it absolutely necessary.

It's a fine-line distinction, but it's one that should be made when discussing competent military thrillers like SPECIAL FORCES.

(NOTE: The following...

The Mission Was A Woman: A Daring Rescue Leads To A Brutal Cross Country Chase
As I sat down to watch the French film "Special Forces," I was poised to enjoy a complex story of tactical operations and international politics. And in the opening scenes, that's just what the movie seemed on the precipice of serving up. However, as the primary story line came into focus, it was clear that "Special Forces" really wasn't about an elite military squad in anything other than title. We see a couple of missions, but nothing of any real strategy is presented. I would have enjoyed these scenes a lot more if the screenplay had delineated just what made this squad so spectacular from a technical, intelligence, or stealth point of view. But as I said, this action endeavor isn't really about a special forces team per se. It is rescue picture. If you remember the tag line for Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," it stated that "the mission was a man." Here, the only objective is the rescue of a woman who happens to be a French war correspondent. In other words, the mission was a...

Linotype: The Film

A Must See, especially for anyone in the printing business
I stumbled across this movie quite by accident and am really glad to have seen it. I had no idea how important the Linotype was in advancing the availability of reading materials to so many people. It was also fascinating to learn about it's evolution, starting with a need to make copies of notes to a becoming a working machine. It's so complex it's a miracle that it works at all, but was the cutting edge technology for printing for 80 years. Thankfully there are still a few people interested in perserving a few Linotype machines for the computer generation to learn about. At just over an hour and a quarter, it's a short film, well worth your time to watch.

Completely awesome
I gotta be honest; I didn't know what to expect with this film. A movie about a printing machine? It simply didn't sound that interesting to me. I heard so many good things about it, but I went in to the theater not having any idea what to expect. I walked out of the theater pleased as punch, and pre-ordered the film before I even left. I plan on showing it to just about anybody that comes over to the house. This turned out to be a completely captivating film with flawless directing and editing that is driven by remarkably interesting and often hilarious characters. Don't let the seemingly boring subject matter fool you. There is not a dull moment in this film.

Thr roar of the press & the smell of the ink
It was like being back there again, 40 years on! I worked for 6 years on a local newspaper and worked a Linotype machine for about 18 months of that time. The Linotype was as complicated and well-engineered as a watch, and was a marvel to watch and work. The film describes how coming of the Linotype was the latter day equivalent of Facebook, Twitter & the World Wide Web all arriving simultaneously, and thereby allowing the printed word to reach the masses more quickly and more cheaply. It changed everything.
This film is a superb evoaction of traditional newspaper production prior to computerisation. Listening to the Linotype machines transported me straight back to my Apprenticeship (

The Smurfs and the Magic Flute

Enjoyable Movie, but this is the UK Dub and Characters' Names Have Been Changed!
The Smurfs and the Magic Flute was directed by the Smurfs creator Peyo and was released to theaters in 1976 in Belgium, and 1979 in the United Kingdom. In 1981, NBC aired The Smurfs from Hanna-Barbera and it was an instant success. An English dubbed version of The Smurfs and the Magic Flute came out to theaters in the USA in 1983. Despite being disliked by critics, the move was a box-office success. Over the years it has been only available on VHS, but never on DVD, until now.

The movie centers on a young squire, Johan, and his goofy sidekick, Peewit, (Peyo created the characters in 1952 and then created the Smurfs in 1958). Peewit gets a hold of a flute that has only six holes. Whoever is playing the flute can control other people by making them dance.

A stranger, Matthew McCreep, steels the flute from Peewit and uses the flute to rob people. The King sends Johan and Peewit to retrieve the flute or their kingdom may fall. They fail at their first attempt to get...

Smurfs
Certainly worth a look for any Smurffan, or animation buff. Catchy little story line, okay animation, but what do you want from 1983? Although I was upset that Gargamel and Azreial were not in it. Watch it! Why not? It's only 75 mins.

Cherry

Fascinating film about love/friendship
CHERRY: THE MOVIE

This is a complicatd and entertaining film about human nature, with a twist. Love Vs. Lust; Friendship Vs. love and good vs evil. A love triangle that keeps you on the seat of your chair....you may know whats going to happen....but find yourself not wanting it to really happen...even tho it is inevitable. A bit of a surprise twist at the end.....

Excellent acting; excellent writing; director Quinn Saunders does an amazing job of developing the characters with the intersting use of color, language, appearance and a set that shows a bit of the "seedy" side of LA that sets the tone for the film. I loved it...and didn't want it to end....

Above average movie, hampered by weak lead
The movie itself is thought provoking and reasonably well written, although Sam's verbal vulgarity at the start was nearly overpowering. It wallowed quite a bit in the middle, but hang in there, the ending was very taught, I truly did not know which way it would go.

I might have stretched and given it 4 stars, but the acting of David Crane as Cherry was ... not very good. I probably acted about as well in high school (and that is not a compliment). The other two leads (Jules, Sam) were both very strong, but that really doesn't undo the damage to my immersion that Crane's acting created. Maybe Crane thought the more he exaggerated Cherry's puppy-dog patheticism, the more "sensitive" the viewer would perceive him? All it did for me was create a growing sense of annoyance, and make consciously wonder, how could these guys have ever become friends? (come to think of it, maybe Sam was played as an extreme caricature too, the non-stop vulgarity at the start in the...

Death Watch

finally distributed at its correct length!
Not only has Death Watch never previously been available on DVD, but this fascinating, moving, and disturbingly prescient SF film has never been distributed in North America at its proper length - something that I'm assured by Shout! Factory will be remedied with this release. Distributors of the film apparently felt, when it was first released in 1980, that a twist that Tavernier introduces into the narrative wouldn't be accepted by the audience, and/or (according to the director) would be seen as too dark a commentary on the cynicism of television producers and their overriding lust for ratings. I won't spoil that twist by letting people know what it is, but for North American admirers of the film as it previously was released here (on VHS, Laserdisc, and on film, clocking in at 117 minutes, as opposed to the correct 128), be advised: you have never seen the film as the director intended it, unless you've bought the hard-to-find French Region 2 DVD (or caught up with it in another...

Unusually thoughtful and sensitively-acted SF
When this movie was first distributed in 1981 it bombed. Presumably it was uncomfortably ahead of its time, for now - 30-plus years later - it's a topical and amazingly relevant. examination of current media intrusions and the prurient popular curiosity that drives them. The settings - Glasgow and its surrounding countryside - are unusual, and magnificently photographed, and the central performances are outstanding. What a talent the film medium lost when the beautiful Romy Schneider died only a short time after making it. Young Keitel is good and truthful too, and of course Dean Stanton and von Seidow do their usual high quality work. There's also an intriguing very early appearance for Robbie Coltrane. The situation is dramatic, the outcome moving and satisfactory. Altogether, this is people-oriented SF and a very fine adaptation of D G Compton's distinguished 1976 novel - which incidentally has recently been reissued by Gollancz in their SF Masterworks series and is well worth a...

Boring at some times
Death Watch is one of this intellectual science fictions, the leftists like so much. They can see meanings where are no
meanings at all. The story is weird sometimes and you think you are too stupid to follow, but the script is stupid.
Schneider and Keitel are wonderful as always. Keitel, a man with a camera in his eye can record everything what he sees.
A owner of a TV station, Keitel is working for, should observe a woman, a court witness. At least, the woman should be
killed with the help of the TV station owner and Keitel. She flees...Maybe Tavernier directed this one, the critcs weren't
too bad.

Delta Boys [HD]

Thought Provoking!
A great short documentary about the Niger Delta struggle! The filmmaker lives deeply within the lives of the freedom fighters and shares a view often missed from main stream media. The film was very well put together, good filming, editing and storyboarding. Thanks for taking the time and energy to put share their story!

The Tortured [HD]

A disturbing yet somewhat satisfying look at what happens when you push parents too far. Graphic but should be seen. I say B+
"Killing him isn't punishment enough." Elise (Christensen) hugs her son goodbye and goes to work. Craig (Metcalfe) is going to play soccer with him but goes in the house to get sunscreen for him. He looks out the window and sees a man grab him and run off. Unable to catch up to the truck he calls the police but the don't find the boy in time. When they hear the the kidnappers punishment is only 25 years to life they take it upon themselves to give him the sentence he deserves. My disclaimer for this is the same I had for "God Bless America". I am in no way advocating what is in this movie but it's something that almost everyone would agree with. The parents find a way to kidnap the kidnapper and proceed to torture him in a way that is both disturbing and satisfying in order to make him feel what he did to their son. While not quite to the level of "Saw" or "Hostel" there are still some pretty graphic scenes in this that make you want to turn away a couple times. There really isn't...

heart wrenchingly vengeful!
WHAT the?? The Tortured satisfies that secret urge most of us have for revenge, *especially* when it pertains to a little child being kidnapped and ultimately killed leaving the parents grieving and crying for justice. If you DESPISE the idea of seeing what was once a normal, happy and innocent family suffer through several years of emotional sadness over such a tragedy, oh boy, you will *love* the Tortured. Sort of unusual to see Erika Christensen -who plays a significantly more peaceful and rational parent in the hit TV show Parenthood- star as a ruthless mother out for revenge. She really surprised me in this role!

So what's this movie about? Imagine getting the opportunity to physically torture the person who kidnapped and killed your child. Would you do it? Would you torture the man until he's almost dead but make sure he's drugged enough to keep him alive *just* for the purpose of torturing him some more? I have a feeling several parents would. After the...

Good Movie, Great Twist
This is one of those movies that really puts in perspective what a parent would do to make a child murderer feel the same pain as their child felt. Can be tough at times to watch (at least for my wife) but I enjoyed it.

The Beatles - Strange Fruit: The Beatles' Apple Records

At 2 hours 42 minutes, still not long enough
Very nice and very in-depth and long discussion of the Apple years, which is beginning to capture historian's imaginations 40 years on. For decades all the Beatles books ended when they broke up in '69. Quite early on Richard DiLello's "The Longest Cocktail Party" was the only available document about the Apple years/scene (1973) that went rather unrecognized. Lately a couple writers have been delving into the solo years (Doggett's fine (if gossipy) "You Never Give Me You Money" (2010) is the first comprehensive bio of the solo years, after FAQ 2.0 outlined the shape of the '70s decade in anecdotes).

This docu has a lot of ground to cover and at 2 hours and 42 minutes takes its time telling various nuances of the story in depth but only appears to have access to a limited number of key people. This is not an authorized or official film so naturally the Beatles do not appear - Tony Bramwell of Apple is the only true "insider" who speaks on camera. A...

Better than you think
For a non-Apple production this is worthwhile .. it's not like the Beatles Secrets or any of these many videos with all public domain footage and no Beatles music, this has actual Beatles music and video content, along with good critical analysis from a couple of authors of Beatle related books, along with music and video by the most common Apple Records artists - Mary Hopkin, Badfinger, Jackie Lomax, James Taylor, and more - if you have the Apple Records compliation of a couple years ago that's kind of a soundtrack to this film. Insightful interviews with Jackie Lomax, Tony Bramwell, and a couple of the remaining Badfinger/Iveys players who were around at the time. Probably the only negative on this was the few minutes spent discussing and talking to David Peel, but overall a good watch. Plus actual video footage from inside 3 Saville Row, which I've never seen on anything even the Anthology or Compleat.

New collection about the Beatles
I enjoyed this video very much, but I was surprised that it was so long. No complaints though about it.

Sing Your Song: Harry Belafonte

Entertainer, Activist, Trailblazer: A Remarkable And Inspiring Journey Through History
I'm almost ashamed to admit how little I knew of the remarkable journey of activist and entertainer Harry Belafonte. While I was aware of many of his philanthropic endeavors with UNICEF and his recent dedication to youth education programs, I was not cognizant of just how pivotal a role Belafonte played in the Civil Rights movement. Susanne Rostock's stirring documentary "Sing Your Song" is a fitting tribute to a man who has tirelessly devoted his life to repairing the social injustices of the world. He used his entertainment career to shed light on the bigger issues of the day and never has celebrity so seamlessly interwoven with activism. Harry Belafonte has had a truly noteworthy life and in this film he shares many war stories with style and candor. He remains an inspiration and after laying out his many accomplishments, the film closes with him asking "What do we do now?" Good question because we need to be doing something different, something more.

"Sing Your...

"An Alternate Reality" and GREAT music!
This movie holds me in rapt attention, and I have watched it 3 times now. My 33-year-old daughter loved it. Two of her comments remain with me: She felt like she was watching an alternate reality, and Belafonte is such a gorgeous man, even at 80 years old.

Watching other movies, with old footage of Birmingham, Selma and Little Rock gives a certain view of what the 1960's were like, but watching this beautiful man live through those times, day-to-day, gives the viewer a sense of what it was like to live a courageous life under segregated conditions.

Finally, how many of us knew what a key player Belafonte was and still is, in the the Civil Rights movement all over the world, bringing cash and star power to the movement, not just his own star power, but Marlon Brando, Tony Curtis, Paul Newman, Tony Bennet, and on and on ...

If you are interested in the Civil Rights movement of yesterday, today, and TOMORROW, or if you just love calypso music sung by a...

This is a wonderful DVD. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Sing Your Song: Harry Belafonte is a wonderful DVD. It is rich in history and music. I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in social justice.

What Happened to Jack Kerouac?

humanity of jack
Nothing happened to Jack Kerouac. He died like the rest of us eventually will. Jack Kerouac was a regular human being. Now you're problably saying "yea I already knew that, so what?". But what you problably didn't know is that Jack used literature to show how beautiful and ugly human beings can be. Kerouac was a man equally feminine as he was masculine (read Charter's biography about his relationships with Ginzy, N.C., as well as the women of his life.) All of this is touched on in the video documentary, which thrives off the somber emotion, and that sort of "grey sky comtemplation" of things, which seems to pervade all of Jack's work. The video moves through Jack's life in a fairly straightforward manner. We see him as a shy french speaking Mass. adolescent, a cleft chinned Columbia undergraduate, a rucksack wanderer,a chanting buddhist,an aloof catholic, who loved his mother and drank much too much Johnnie Walker. In "What happnened to...

THIS IS THE ONE - BY FAR, THE BEST KEROUAC DOCUMENTARY
A near-perfect documentary on Kerouac, and the list of interviewees is...well, they are all here: Herbert Huncke,
William S Burroughs, Gary Snyder, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, 1st wife Joyce Kerouac, daughter Jan Kerouac, Diane DiPalma, Carolyn Cassady, a short, but priceless b & w film clip of Neal Cassady at City Lights Bookstore in San Francisco in the 1960's, much of the William F Buckley interview with Jack from 1968, Kerouac reading from On the Road on the Steve Allen Show, many of Jack's tape-recorded poetry readings with appropriate vintage footage from San Francisco, Times Square NYC, Jack's hometown, Lowell,MA etc., and an insightful interview with Gregory Corso, who seemed to understand, and put into words better than anyone else, the essence of Kerouac.

MacAdams kindles Beat flame
In a subject where "expert" commentary frequently brings to mind overused, deflated balloons or some flaccid, rubbery French pastry, this film is a nonpareil. Amazingly, MacAdams has drilled into a motherlode of material elsewhere untapped; sources include the fiercely protected estate of Kerouac (evident through a rare, outstanding recording of Kerouac reading parts of Dr. Sax high on tea; Tulane historian Douglas Brinkley is now sifting through all of it), Ken Kesey's Merry Prankster footage (live reels of Cassady!), Kerouac's later, soused appearance on Buckley's "Firing Line," and interviews with central figures in Kerouac's life and in the Beat movement: John Clellon Holmes, Diane DiPrima, Michael McClure, Carolyn Cassady, Herbert Huncke, Joyce Johnson, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Gary Snyder, and (best of all) Gregory Corso (watch for the explanation of "the classy spirit"). The film is simply produced but marvelously filmed, with picturesque...
